But it’s not just that the songs match the settings – there’s a low constant drone that keeps you unsettled…and Lily pointed out that Fear Columbus uses sound cues as precisely as a horror movie. The Summoning, which looks like it’s set in the early 20 th century, features old-timey radio music while the post-apocalyptic Aftermath uses pounding metal to underscore its terrors. Aside from the, um, immersive approach to sound, the soundtracks match the mood of the haunts. You can feel the sound vibrating in your bones. It would be incorrect to describe this haunted house as simply “loud,” although it is that. (Don’t worry – you’ll still be surprised.) The website promises a “state of the art sound system,” and that sound system plays a role in every scare you will experience. Fear Columbus even reveals one of its secret weapons. Fear Columbus guarantees guests “one of the largest and most elaborate haunted house productions in Ohio.” If you want a sense of what to expect, read the website carefully. However, it’s under new, local ownership and boasts a brand-new attraction (The Summoning) for 2021. This attraction was formerly part of the 13 th Floor stable of haunted houses. Whatever is behind us, and whatever lies ahead of us, we’re going to keep going.įear Columbus Haunted House in Columbus, OH, is not an entirely new player on the haunt scene. However, our disorientation must be apparent because she pauses and says kindly, “If at any time it gets too intense, just head for the nearest emergency exit.” This triggers my inner Karen – Lily and I have been through more than twenty haunted houses since the beginning of September, and we’re not about to bolt for the exits now.
